Sekolah Insan Cendekia Madani: Fostering a Culture of Reading and Writing
11 December 2015

As Sekolah Insan Cendekia Madani (ICM), Serpong, Tangerang, approaches its fifth anniversary in December this year, a series of celebratory events were organized, culminating in a heartfelt gathering at ICM Auditorium on Saturday (5/12).

During this momentous occasion, Tamsil Linrung, one of the school's founders, orchestrated a touching cultural oration delivered by the renowned Indonesian poet Taufik Ismail. Taufik addresses the pivotal role of moral education in rectifying societal moral challenges, emphasizing the significance of nurturing moral values, faith in Allah SWT, and the pursuit of goodness within the education system.

The cultural oration also highlighted the importance of promoting reading and writing activities within educational institutions, advocating for integrating mandatory book reading and essay writing into the curriculum.

Taufik Ismail stressed that private schools like ICM are uniquely positioned to incorporate such activities, fostering an environment that encourages literary exploration and expression.

In light of this, Tamsil emphasized the school's commitment to enhancing cultural insight, positioning it as a central theme for the fifth-anniversary celebrations. Notably, ICM obtained permission from the Ministry of Education and Culture to establish cooperative education units (SPK) in the 2015/2016 academic year, enabling the development of a curriculum aligned with the school's vision and mission.

ICM's curriculum framework encompasses national, international, and Islamic cultural insights, with collaborations with Cambridge International, Apple Education South Asia, Google Education, al-Kautsar, Diniyah Putri, and other educational institutions. The school's curriculum integrates national curriculum references, international standards from Cambridge International, and Islamic cultural values through the prophetic curriculum.

As part of the SPK initiative, ICM has cultivated an environment that empowers student creativity, allowing them to channel their potential through various school activities, including the promotion of reading and writing. The school's commitment to fostering literary activities extends beyond its student body to the surrounding community, reflecting its dedication to promoting literacy and literary culture.

The literacy program at ICM has not only encouraged writing activities but has also spurred a rapid development in students' writing skills. Several students have published their papers, and the school's library serves as a hub for nurturing reading and writing activities. The library hosts engaging events and serves as a space for students to participate in literary endeavours, fostering a love for reading and writing among the student body.

The fifth-anniversary celebrations, themed "ICM For Your Country," underscore the school's commitment to contributing to the Indonesian nation's intellectual and social fabric. The event featured a diverse array of activities, including arts, sports and cultural competitions, parenting seminars, Islamic education seminars, social services, and charitable initiatives, reflecting ICM's holistic approach to education and community engagement.

The school's dedication to promoting a love for reading and writing, coupled with its multifaceted contributions to the community, exemplifies its commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals with a passion for literature, culture, and national development.
